Christ at the Checkpoint, Part 2

Part 2 of Christ at the Checkpoint (edited by Manfred W. Kohl and Munther Isaac) features a biblical response to Christian Zionism. Most notably, Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac writes about how Christian Zionism is an imperial theology based in supremacy. I think that this is important to remember, because a lot of people want to “debate” Zionism without realizing the supremacist grounding of all of it.

Of part two of the book Christ at the Checkpoint, I highly recommend Rev. Dr. Isaac’s essay. My favorite quotation from it comes from Fr. Paul Tarazi:

“What puzzles us Middle Eastern Christians is that Western Christians, who say at least that they consider Western Christendom largely responsible for the Nazi holocaust and go on backing — very often unconditionally — the actual state of Israel, still want to convince us that they are not imposing any theology on us and that we are free to have our standpoint concerning biblical interpretation. How can they say so when they are repenting on our ground over a deed which happened on theirs — all this based on a premise we reject? This is a rare combination of both theological and political imperialism.” (114)

About Christian Minus Christianity

“I do think it’s important to dismantle imperial Christianity in a form, and for the reign of God to liberate the oppressed and God’s entire creation from systems of supremacy, exploitation, and destruction. I also believe that every theologian and Christian are doing theology from their own context, wherever they are. All theologies are contextual.”
