What if the martyred children returned one by one,
Entering the houses
With joy ringing in their voices like the sound of hail,
Throwing down their school bags,
Hungry and soaked by the rain?
What if they returned,
And this war became as if it never was?
How wonderful you would be, rain,
As we gather around our dinner tables to hear their laughter,
And light a fire for you.
What if the houses that fell
Have seeds,
So we can plant them and rebuild them in the same way?
A wooden door opens, heavy,
Saturated with dampness and tales of time,
And a peach tree in the corner,
And a grapevine without leaves,
And another wooden door,
Thinner,
Opens onto a family:
A father wrapped in his cloak,
And a mother whose voice sings of the hearth.
What if this war never was?
How wonderful you would be, rain.
