At the gym, not far from where I stood, a ten-year-old boy was training with a weight in his left hand. A long time passed, yet he never moved his other arm. I looked more closely and saw that it had been amputated below the elbow. Then I looked at his face, and it was his eyes that stopped me—eyes as though the night had hidden within them its most beautiful stars.
I watched him with a quiet ache. When he noticed me, I said,
“In the age of artificial intelligence, they’ll make you a hand stronger and more beautiful than before.”
But he gave a quick shake of his head, as if brushing away my pity, and continued his workout.
A bird challenging the sky with a single wing, determined to prove that it could still fly.
My God…
Why did You pour so much light into the eyes of a child missing a hand?
